Kingswood continuously seeks out opportunities to collaborate with other responsible organizations that are also dedicated to helping improve the lives of seniors. Kingswood coordinates with home health services providers, hospitals, durable medical equipment suppliers, hospice organizations, hearing specialists, and other agencies to provide the very best products and services to our residents. Kingswood is a teaching facility for the following schools: Baptist-Lutheran Medical Center, Penn Valley Community College for nursing assistants, Rockhurst University/Research college of Nursing, and Johnson County Community College nursing program and culinary arts program. The Goppert Clinic at Kingswood is an extension program of Baptist –Lutheran Medical Center that teaches physicians to become family practitioners. The resident physicians assume responsibility for patients at Kingswood under the direction of a teaching physician who also serves as Kingswood’s Medical Director. In addition to these services, Kingswood has worked with groups to promote better funding and services for seniors through attendance at the annual meetings of the Missouri Association of Homes for the Aging and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and as an active participant at hearings at the state and federal level that address older adult services. Kingswood’s Speaker’s Bureau provides education to area churches and civic groups on topics related to aging. Through its Bridge Builders program, Kingswood staff and residents reach out to local churches, schools, and social service agencies to provide volunteers and other resources to the community.
Who We Are...
We are residents of Kingswood Senior Living Community. We have received many blessings throughout our lives, and now we are seeking ways to give back to our community through volunteerism.
Opportunities to Serve...
Every week or perhaps just once a year, in your home or out in the community — there are many ways to serve others who are less fortunate than we. Some of the volunteer teams presently at Kingswood are:
Disaster Response
The team is in place to lead Kingswood residents to respond appropriately to emergency
needs, such as Hurricane Katrina.
Youth Friends
Volunteers work one hour weekly with selected elementary school children in the Center
School District, serving as readers (“Off Your Rocker”), tutors, mentors and “Lunch Buddies.”
Meals on Wheels
Some volunteers package food, while others deliver Meals on Wheels to selected neighbors in the community.
Adult Literacy
Trained volunteers work with illiterate adult students who come to Kingswood twice each week for instruction.
Cancer Pads
A group meets each Thursday to sew cancer pads for the American Cancer Society.
Knitters
Knitters meet each Thursday (with others knitting in their apartments or villas throughout the week), knitting
stocking caps and other items for homeless persons.
Household Items for International Students
Volunteers collect household items for free annual distribution to international students enrolling at UMKC.
Children's Mercy Hearing Clinic
Kingswood is a collection station for discarded hearing aids which will be remade for the benefit of
children in the hearing clinic of Children's Mercy Hospital.
Volunteering is a rewarding experience for all involved. Kingswood officially organized and began tracking its volunteer program in 1989. Over the years Kingswood has averaged 90 active volunteers per year. 12,000 hours of service have been logged so far for 2006!
